ID Document Requirements
To complete your verification, you must provide one of the following government-issued identification documents:
Accepted ID Documents:
National identity card (must include MRZ – machine-readable zone)
Passport (must include MRZ – machine-readable zone)
Driver’s licenses
Residence permits
Temporary ID documents (e.g., provisional identity cards)
Only national identity cards and passports with an MRZ (machine-readable zone) can be used. The MRZ is the area with lines of numbers and letters at the bottom of the document.
For instance, Swiss B or C permits, "Bewilligung," or "Niederlassungsausweis" are all examples of residence permits that are not accepted.
Important Scanning Tips
Scan the back side first: Always start by scanning the back side of your ID, then the front side, especially the side with the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone).
Hold steady: Keep your phone steady and ensure all four corners of the document are visible during the scan.
Use good lighting: Make sure you’re in a well-lit area to capture the MRZ clearly.
NFC Chip Information (If Your ID Has One)
Your ID document does not necessarily need to have an NFC chip to be used for verification in the Relai app. However, if it does have an NFC chip, you can usually identify this by the following symbol:
Hold the document against the NFC scanner of your smartphone.
On most smartphones, this is located on the back, near the center or close to the camera.
What to Do If Your ID Does Not Have an NFC Chip
For passports, there is always an NFC chip, so this step does not apply.
If your ID card does not have an NFC chip, you will see a “Skip reading” option immediately after the ID scan. Simply select this to continue the verification process.
If Your NFC Chip Is Not Recognized
If your ID card has an NFC chip, but the app cannot complete the NFC scan, it will attempt twice automatically.
